Privacy Policy

QuranSathi ("we", "us", "the app") is a free mobile and web companion for reading the Quran, learning prayer, finding Qibla direction, and asking questions about Islam. We respect your privacy and collect only what is necessary to make the app work.

1. Information we collect

1.1 Account information

If you create an account we collect:

• Your phone number (in E.164 format, e.g. +91XXXXXXXXXX)
• A display name if you set one
• The date your account was created

Sign-in is by SMS one-time password (OTP). Your phone number is sent from our backend to Gupshup, which delivers the SMS on our behalf. When you enter the code, our backend verifies it and issues a short-lived session token (JWT) that your device stores locally. We do not receive or store your SMS content.

1.2 Device-stored data (never sent to us)

The following stays on your device and is never uploaded:

• Hifz (memorization) progress
• Fasting log during Ramadan
• Hajj step completion
• Zakat calculator inputs and history
• Bookmarks, reading position, app preferences

This data lives in your phone's local storage (AsyncStorage). Uninstalling the app deletes it.

1.3 Permissions you grant in-app

• Location — used to compute accurate prayer times and the Qibla direction. Your coordinates are sent to the Aladhan API to fetch times; we never store them.
• Microphone — used when you tap the mic to recite a verse. Your recitation is transcribed entirely on your device (Apple's Speech framework on iOS, Android's SpeechRecognizer on Android, or your browser's built-in speech recognition on web). The audio never leaves your phone and is not uploaded to us or any third party. Only the resulting text transcript is sent to our server to grade it word-by-word against the ayah.
• Motion — used by the Qibla compass to read the device's magnetometer. Sensor data stays on your device.

1.4 Saathi AI conversations

When you chat with Saathi, your message is sent to Anthropic (Claude API) for the AI response. We do not log your messages on our server. Anthropic's privacy policy applies to processing.

1.5 What we do NOT collect

• We do not use advertising trackers or third-party analytics SDKs.
• We do not collect contacts, photos, calendar, or any data outside what you explicitly grant.
• We do not sell or share your data with any third party for marketing.

2. Third-party services we use

• Gupshup — to deliver the sign-in OTP over SMS.
• Anthropic Claude API — to power Saathi AI replies.
• Aladhan API — to fetch prayer times and Hijri dates from your latitude/longitude.
• AlQuran Cloud API — to fetch Quran text, translation, and recitation audio.
• Amazon Web Services (AWS) — to host the backend API.

3. Data retention

Account data (phone number, display name) is retained as long as your account exists. Local app data is retained on your device until you uninstall or clear app data. We do not run any user data retention beyond what's necessary to operate the service.

4. Your rights

You can:

• Delete your account at any time. This removes your phone number and authentication record.
• Sign out at any time from the Settings screen.
• Revoke microphone, location, or motion permissions in your device settings — the relevant features will stop working but the rest of the app continues normally.
• Email us at support@quransathi.com to ask what data we hold on you.

5. Children

QuranSathi is intended for users aged 13 and above. We do not knowingly collect data from children under 13. If you believe a child has signed up, contact us and we will delete the account.

6. Security

All network traffic uses HTTPS. OTP codes are single-use and expire quickly; only a hash-comparable record is retained by the OTP provider for delivery. After successful verification we issue a short-lived JWT signed with a strong secret for subsequent API requests.

7. International users

Our backend is hosted on Amazon Web Services in India (Mumbai region). By using QuranSathi, you consent to your data being processed there. Third-party services (Gupshup, Anthropic) may process data in their own regions per their respective privacy policies.

8. Changes to this policy

If we materially change this policy, we will update the "Last updated" date at the top of this page and, where appropriate, notify you in-app on next launch.
